Edinburg pharmacy closes prescription department

People’s Drug Store in Edinburg will close its prescription department at the end of the month.

Harry Murray, owner and pharmacist, said the pharmacy department will be transferred to Walton & Smoot Pharmacy in Woodstock on the last day of December.

He said the reason for the closure is because the store wasn’t receiving enough money from the insurance companies to keep the department up and running.

It has nothing to do with their customers, he said, and he expressed his “appreciation to his loyal customers and friends.”

The store has been in business for about 100 years. Murray purchased the store in 1962.

He also owns Murray’s Fly Shop in the same building the pharmacy is located in. This shop will not be changed. He said a new sign — Murray’s Fly Shop — will be placed in front of the store, replacing the People’s Drug Store sign.

An avid fly fisher, Murray has written 15 books on the subject and he teaches a class on how to fly fish, he said.

The pharmacy and fly shop are located at 121 S. Main St., in Edinburg.
