Community health forum set for Saturday

The Handley Regional Library will hold part one of a minimum six-part series Community Health Forums beginning this Saturday.

The forums will be held at the Handley Library Auditorium in downtown Winchester at 10 a.m.

With the snowstorm on its way, a snow date has been set for Jan. 30 if Saturday’s forum is canceled. Check the library website at www.handleyregional.org for updates on if the forum will be postponed.

The first forum is called Community Health 101: How Do We Measure Up and What Can We Do About It?

Cee Ann Davis, director of Blue Ridge Community Health, and a keynote speaker at the forum, said this first presentation is about explaining county health rankings. These rankings are based on the health information of Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties, as well as the City of Winchester.

“Everybody in the community is a partner in community health,” she said.

These forums are a way to engage the public in community health and provide the information needed for the public to “assess and react” to what is happening in their community, she said.

Other speakers at this forum include Aliana Havrilla, a community coach at County Health Ranking & Roadmaps, and Charles Devine, director of the Lord Fairfax Health District, who will be available during a Q&A segment.

She added that this series will be an “interactive series.” Those who attend will introduce themselves and participate in Q&A sessions. The community will also write down their “greatest concerns” and the series will include these topics in future forums.

This series will include at least five more forums, one each month. Planned future topics include the Impact of Adult and Childhood Obesity, Community Strategies to Prevent and Combat Violence, Mental Health Check Up, Access to Health Care Services, and Water Quality and Accident Prevention.

The dates of these forums are Feb. 27, March 26, April 23, May 21 and June 25, from 10 a.m. until noon at the Handley Library Auditorium in Winchester.
