Authorities identify wounded man

Charles H. Cook

The Virginia State Police Tuesday identified the man who was shot in a confrontation with a Frederick County deputy Sunday morning in the Clear Brook area.

The man, Charles H. Cook, 42, of Clear Brook, was still being treated in the Winchester Medical Center for a serious, but non-life threatening gunshot wound, state police said in a written statement.

State police say Cook was wounded at a residence in the 300 block of Browns Lane after deputies received a report around 10 a.m. of an armed man threatening suicide. Deputies arrived at the scene and tried to calm Cook, but he grew more agitated and fired his gun at them, state police said.

A deputy returned fire and hit Cook, state police said.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office called state police and asked them to investigate the shooting, a normal procedure after shootings involving local law enforcement officials.

State police said charges are pending against Cook, and their investigation is continuing.
