Interstate 81 northbound lanes were temporarily closed off Friday morning after a single-vehicle crash near mile marker 292.

State Police Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler said the incident occurred around 10:05 a.m., when a tractor trailer driver transporting dry cement ran off the road near the Toms Brook exit and struck a guard rail on the right side of the northbound lanes.

He said state police at the incident were assisted by a Motor Carrier Safety team, the Shenandoah Sheriff’s Office and fire and rescue teams from both Shenandoah and Strasburg.

Tyler said the driver,  Lyle Dillon, 59, of Troutville, Virginia, was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Sandy Myers, a spokeswoman for Virginia Department of Transportation, said workers shut down both northbound lanes by 10:19 a.m. and redirected traffic so that the helicopter could land. She said the left lane opened at 10:50 a.m. and the road was clear by 12:12 p.m.
