Council to vote on water, sewer rate hikes this month

EDINBURG – Town Council will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. March 29 to vote on a proposal to increase water and sewer rates.

The proposal calls for a $2 per month increase for in-town water customers who use 3,000 or less gallons each month, from $24.74 a month to $26.75 per month. Out of town water customers would see an increase of $2.98, from $37.15 to $40.13.

Sewage rates for 3,000 gallons or less would go up $3 for in-town customers, from $24 a month to $27 a month. Out of town sewage rates would increase by $4.50, from $36 to $40.50 per month.

Mayor Dan Harshman said the increases are needed due to higher fees for water testing.

In other news from Tuesday’s council meeting:

• Thirty new filter membranes, at a cost of $250 a piece, have been replaced at the town’s water treatment facility. Seals were replaced for $1,607.

• Harshman has signed a construction contract for the rain garden along Stony Creek. The garden, funded by a $43,000 grant secured by the Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, will be aimed at erosion mitigation.
