New Market mayor seeks reelection

New Market Mayor Douglas Bradley is seeking reelection when the town votes May 3.

Bradley, who has served as the town’s mayor for the past four years, is a Luray native and a graduate of Luray High School. He worked for Sears, was promoted within the company and relocated to Pennsylvania.

A longtime politician, Bradley served as mayor of Clark, Pennsylvania, for 18 years before moving to New Market in 2008. He served as a councilman for six years in Clark before becoming mayor.

Bradley said he is proud of the work he has done as mayor.

“We’ve added a position in the town — events and marketing director — and we’ve got some activities going on through that program,” he said. “We need to improve our economic development. That’ll be my number one goal.”

Despite the pride Bradley feels from the job he has done, he said he isn’t satisfied.

“I want to see growth in New Market,” he said. “We’ve lost some businesses there and we need to put our focus on growth and I think we need to have more activities going on… I want to see more activities in the town to enhance the quality of life.”

Bradley also spoke on his desire to see New Market as a destination for events.

“One thing we’re working on now is bringing the fireworks back to New Market on July 3. That looks like it will be a go. There will be all kinds of games, food, and activities, and I think we need more of that in the town,” he said.

Bradley, a widower, is the father of two grown children.
