Daily sweeps top awards in annual contest

The Northern Virginia Daily took home top honors for overall excellence from the Virginia Press Association’s annual awards banquet held in Richmond on Saturday.

The Daily won sweepstakes awards for both news and advertising, and won the grand sweepstakes prize by collecting the most award points for first, second and third places in both news and advertising for its work during 2015 in its class of newspapers with a circulation under 20,000.

The Virginian-Pilot, of Norfolk, won the grand sweepstakes in the daily class with a circulation over 70,000. The News & Advance, of Lynchburg, and The Free Lance-Star, of Fredericksburg, tied for grand sweepstakes for newspapers with a circulation between 20,000 and 70,000.

Also winning grand sweepstakes were the Loudoun Times-Mirror, of Leesburg, in the non-daily class with a circulation of over 7,000, and Style Weekly, of Richmond, in the Specialty class.

Current and past newsroom employees of the Northern Virginia Daily took home 10 first place awards, five second place awards and eight third place awards. The winners are:
