Maddox seeks seat on Strasburg Town Council
STRASBURG – Another longtime area resident now living in Strasburg wants to serve on Town Council.
Shirley Maddox, 68, is semi-retired and designs costumes. Maddox took an interest in serving on council after she moved into town.
“It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do but living out in the county of course I didn’t have the opportunity to do anything like this,” Maddox said. “So when I moved into town I just felt the need to give back to my community a little more than I’m currently doing.”
The Manteo, North Carolina, native lived in the Clary-Lebanon Church area of Shenandoah County for 35 years before she moved into Strasburg about four years ago. Maddox graduated from Hampton High School and then from Shenandoah University.
Election Day is May 3.
If elected, Maddox said she would like to continue to promote programs that provide nutrition to needy children and families. Maddox said she also would like to set up more programs for senior citizens.
“I am a senior and I know some of the needs and other seniors talk to me,” Maddox said. “One thing is a lack of transportation and I think there might be some grant funding somewhere that can maybe help with that.”
Economic development remains important, Maddox said.
“Everyone that comes here says what a quaint town you have,” Maddox said. “They love Strasburg and I just think we need to help our local businesses thrive.”
Maddox doesn’t have prior political experience but serves on the board for Thrivent Financial, a nonprofit organization that offers financial services. She also serves on the board for Shenandoah Valley Ministries.
Maddox has a son in the U.S. Army and a daughter who works as a freelance graphic artist in Maryland. Maddox also has three grandchildren.
