Body found in park believed suicide
Law enforcement believes that a body found in Sherando Park on Monday afternoon was that of an individual who committed suicide.
Capt. Donnie Lang of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said that a walker on a heavily wooded path in the park called in to report the body at around 2:30 p.m. Monday. He said the body was hanging from a tree.
Lang said the body was sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Fairfax for an autopsy conducted Tuesday morning.
“Other than the obvious mark on his neck, nothing else would give us suspicion that anything else happened to the gentleman,” he said.
Lang said deputies closed off the trail and conducted their investigation by around 5:30 p.m. Monday. He said the individual was a male Stephens City resident, and deputies did not find a car belonging to the individual at Sherando Park.
He said he can’t recall any suicides in Sherando Park or in other public parks within the county.
“It’s unusual for a hanging, especially out in public,” he said. “It’s extremely rare to be out and visible to the public.”
