Front Royal police stepping up patrol next week

Front Royal Police officers will be among area police departments monitoring the streets during the nationwide Click It or Ticket campaign that starts next week.

A written release from the office of Front Royal Police Chief Norman Shiflett stated that drivers will see more officers and checkpoints on the road during the course of the campaign, which will last from Monday through June 5.

“Wearing a seat belt is one of the most important steps in increasing survivability in a crash,” Shiflett stated in the release. “It’s our greatest defense when involved in a traffic crash.”

Master Police Officer Travis Cave said officers will be on the lookout for seat belt violations and other traffic violations through those two weeks. If people go out with the intention of drinking, he said they should plan ahead and have a designated driver with them.

“With the Memorial Day holiday coming up and the Memorial Day weekend…it’s always important to buckle up, but it’s especially important to buckle up during the holiday weekend.”

Statewide, he said data from January shows that around 77.3 percent of Virginians are buckled up. He also said that a recent officer-conducted survey reported that around 89 percent of Front Royal residents use their seat belts.

“We typically average in the 80s over the past several years…that number is significantly higher than usual,” he said. “I’m just happy to see that people think it’s important to wear their seat belt.”
