Middletown hires treasurer as town manager

MIDDLETOWN – For the first time since 2012, Middletown will soon have an official town manager.

Treasurer Rebecca Layman will assume the role and its corresponding responsibilities.

Despite the new title, both Layman and Middletown Mayor Charles Harbaugh said Layman has already been carrying out a majority of what neighboring towns’ managers do in her role as treasurer.

Layman’s new responsibilities will include grant writing as well as coordinating and organizing special projects.

“I’m very excited for the new responsibilities,” she said.

While no tasks are set in stone, Layman said one of her major goals and first potential projects will be beautifying Main Street.

“We’ll start there and move forward,” she said.

Although she will be town manager, Layman will continue to hold her role as town treasurer.

Harbaugh said Layman was an easy choice given how congruous a town manager and treasurer’s jobs are. However, he said, she will have a more known presence around town with the promotion.

“Her new position will probably become more involved in the town,” he said.
