Raley to serve as Goochland County superintendent
Shenandoah County Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Raley is leaving for Goochland County Public Schools.
Raley resigned his position with Shenandoah schools at a Wednesday meeting of the School Board. The board accepted his resignation, effective June 30, and appointed Mark A. Johnston as interim superintendent, effective July 1.
Raley’s position with Goochland will begin July 1.
Raley was one of about 30 applicants for the position, board chairman Kevin Hazzard stated in a Goochland County Public Schools news release. Raley was one of four selected for interviews. His qualifications in finance, student achievement and innovation sent him to the top of the list, Hazzard stated.
“Dr. Raley will bring a unique blend of leadership skills to Goochland County Public Schools,” Hazzard stated. “During the search process, the Board was moved by his calm, thoughtful, and mature approach to handling various kinds of issues. We believe that Dr. Raley will further cultivate the spirit of trust and innovation that we’ve been developing here for some time.”
Raley’s salary has been set at $160,000 per year, the release stated.
Goochland County Public Schools is home to Goochland High School, Goochland Middle School, and Goochland, Byrd and Randolph elementary schools.
Northwest of Richmond, Goochland County has a population of 21,717, according to April 2010 results on the U.S. Census Bureau’s website, http://www.census.gov. The median household income from 2010-2014 was $82,460, and the county’s poverty rate was 7.5 percent.
The population of Shenandoah County was 41,993 as of the April 2010 census. The median household income from 2010-2014 was $47,936. The county poverty rate was 12 percent.
Raley will fill a position left by Superintendent James F. Lane, who was recently named Virginia Superintendent of the Year. Lane has been selected as the new superintendent for Chesterfield County Public Schools, effective July 1.
Raley and his wife Cindy have two children, Heather and Hayden, who will attend Goochland Middle School in the fall.
“We look forward to having the opportunity to meet new people, get involved with community activities, and to explore all that Goochland has to offer,” Raley stated in the release.
