School Board elects delegate for convention

WOODSTOCK – The Shenandoah County School Board approved a delegate, alternate delegate and member of the year nomination for the Virginia School Board Association at its Thursday night meeting.

Karen Whetzel was approved to serve as the board’s delegate at the Virginia School Board Association’s Delegate Assembly and Regional Meeting at the 2016 Virginia School Board Association’s annual convention. This year’s convention will be held Nov. 16-18 in Williamsburg.

Katheryn Freakley was approved as the board’s alternate if Whetzel is unable to attend the convention.

The Virginia School Board Association is also accepting nominations for Regional School Board Member of the Year. The Shenandoah County School Board has nominated Whetzel for this recognition.

Interim Superintendent Mark Johnston said Whetzel has gone above and beyond her duties as a School Board member, resulting in her nomination.

Whetzel thanked the board for their nomination, but added that teamwork has made the School Board and the division successful.

Also at the meeting, Katherine Coffman, of Woodstock, said there has been an “abuse of power” within the school division, speaking about the atmosphere at Strasburg High School following events of the past year, which included school and law enforcement investigations into alleged misconduct on a bus carrying members of the Strasburg JV and varsity boys basketball teams last December.

Coffman said educators at the high school are leaving their positions in the county due to a lack of trust and being mircromanaged by school division staff and said it will take time for the school to heal from the loss of “many quality staff members.”
