Lane shift set for Strasburg Road near town

FRONT ROYAL – Motorists should remain alert for a traffic-lane shift on state Route 55 (Strasburg Road) beginning next week.

The Virginia Department of Transportation issued the warning Tuesday for the shift slated to last through next spring. The shift allows contractors to work on the road and utilities along Strasburg Road as part of the reconstruction of its intersection with U.S. 340-522 north of Front Royal.

Crews will shift both directions of Strasburg Road south between A.S. Rhodes Elementary School and the U.S. 340-522 intersection for about three-tenths of a mile. Pavement markings, signs and traffic barrels will guide motorists through the area. Drivers can use existing turn lanes.

VDOT advises motorists to allow more time in their daily commute and to expect delays through the work zone.

Contractors are replacing the Shenandoah River South Fork Bridge and reconfiguring the state Route 55-U.S. 340-522 intersection into a “quadrant roadway interchange.” The bridge replacement and interchange work is scheduled for completion in late 2017.

All work is weather permitting.
