School Board to discuss policies, arts academy

Mark Johnston

Policy review and an update on the Summer Arts Academy will be among topics of discussion at Thursday night’s Shenandoah County School Board meeting.

Interim Superintendent Mark Johnston said that as part of their informational agenda, the board will review 36 policy changes.

“A very large majority of them are recommended for change because of changes in Virginia Code per last year’s legislative session,” he said. “Others are being recommended for minor changes to update such things as email references.”

Chairwoman Karen Whetzel said the board is required to review all policies on a regular basis and they also receive recommendations from the Virginia School Boards Association based on changes in state code.

The division’s Summer Arts Academy will also be discussed. Johnston said the program has run for the past four years and has been very successful.

He said it is “a very popular summer program” that replaced an earlier program that didn’t boast large participation.

“For the presentation to the board, we typically like a glimpse of the performances that are the hallmark of the arts academy,” he said.

Presenters slated for Thursday night’s meeting include teachers Sarah Golden, Melanie Woods and Allison O’Boyle. Chad Hensley, the division’s elementary education director who provides administrative oversight of the program, will make an introduction to the presentation.

Also at the meeting, the board will vote on a personnel list.

A closed session will also be held at 6 p.m. before the public meeting at 7 p.m.
