Vandals hit more than 100 mailboxes

The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a wave of vandalism that damaged up to 190 mailboxes in the Edinburg and Mount Jackson area early Wednesday.

Capt. Wesley Dellinger said officials were still trying to reach an exact number, but he estimated a range of 150 to 190.

“That’s a large number, more than we’ve had in the recent past,” Dellinger said.

He said the sheriff’s office has identified “multiple” suspects, but no arrests had been made as of late Wednesday.

“We do have some suspects,” Dellinger said. “We anticipate charges being filed shortly.”

Authorities have not identified a motive for the vandalism.

Dellinger said the damage was concentrated in a rural area west of Interstate 81 in the middle part of the county around Edinburg and Mount Jackson.

He said the vandals struck between midnight and 6 a.m. Deputies identified numerous boxes damaged at residences where the occupants were not home.

Dellinger said anyone with information about the case should contact the Sheriff’s Office at 459-6100.
