Man arrested in vandalism spree

Brandon Scott Bly

Authorities have charged a Mount Jackson man with 89 counts of vandalism in connection with a mailbox vandalism spree in the central part of the county west of Interstate 81.

The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office identified the defendant as Brandon Scott Bly, 19, of 13 Cherry St. Bly is also charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Capt. Wesley Dellinger of the Sheriff’s Office said authorities have identified two juvenile suspects, but they have not yet been charged.

“As of right now, we currently have three suspects but it’s an ongoing investigation as well,” Dellinger said. “We have more leads to develop, and there’s going to be additional charges as well.”

Authorities estimate 150 to 190 mailboxes were vandalized early Wednesday morning in the countryside around Edinburg and Mount Jackson.

Dellinger said the number of mailboxes spread over a large area indicates that the vandals used a vehicle during the spree.

Dellinger said Bly turned himself into the Sheriff’s Office not long after warrants for his arrest were issued at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Bly is scheduled to appear in Shenandoah County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court at 9 a.m. Oct. 20 and Shenandoah County General District Court at 2 p.m. Oct. 21.

Anyone with information to contribute to the investigation is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 459-6100.
