Man detained in Woodstock shooting

Authorities detained a suspect following a shooting that occurred east of Woodstock around 7 p.m. Monday.

The suspect, Douglas Brantley Johnston, 57, shot a 68-year-old man who has not yet been identified. Shenandoah County Sheriff Timothy Carter said the victim’s condition is not life threatening.

The suspect and victim share a residence at 265 Hickory Lane in Woodstock, where the shooting took place.

The incident began when Johnston underwent what Major Scott Proctor of the Sheriff’s Office described as a “mental health crisis.”

Proctor said Johnston brandished a weapon, at which point he and the victim engaged in a fight for control of it. During the scuffle, the handgun discharged, striking the victim in his left heel.

Authorities recovered a .38 caliber revolver from the residence.

The victim was taken from the crime scene to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital where he is being treated.

Johnston was in custody, although as of late Monday he had not yet been charged.

The situation is under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
