Man charged with attempted murder

FRONT ROYAL – A town resident has been charged with attempted first-degree murder stemming from an incident Oct. 3 at an apartment building at 409 East Criser Road.

The defendant, Tony William Hatfield Jr., 26, is accused of firing a pistol into the door of an occupied apartment.

A criminal complaint filed against Hatfield links him to two additional gun offenses from the same incident and several other offenses allegedly committed shortly before the gun was fired. The other charges include use of a gun in a felony – first offense; malicious shooting into an occupied building; burglary; stealing a gun; and possession of stolen property with intent to sell.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Layton said in an interview that Hatfield has made several court appearances since his arrest on the attempted murder charge Oct. 21.

“It involved someone trying to shoot someone through a closed door,” Layton said of the case.

The criminal complaint says Front Royal police received a complaint Oct. 3 of a drunken male firing a gun inside a building. An officer arriving at the scene found Hatfield inside the building. The complaint says a pistol was found on the floor, and Hatfield was read his Miranda rights.

The complaint says Hatfield admitted stealing the gun and jewelry from an apartment in a nearby building.

“Mr. Hatfield stated that he entered the building through an open window,” the complaint says, adding that, “after stealing the gun and the jewelry,” Hatfield entered the building at 409 East Criser Road where police found him.

The complaint says witnesses reported that Hatfield stood outside an apartment, and fired the gun into the door of the apartment, which was occupied by another person.

“Mr. Hatfield stated that the weapon discharge was accidental and that he wanted to talk to the apartment occupant about how to get rid of the gun,” the complaint says.

Hatfield is scheduled to appear at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday in Warren County General District Court.
