Prisoner escaped to receive drugs, search warrant states

WOODSTOCK – A prisoner who escaped from his work release detail in September made the jail break in an attempt to receive drugs from a family member, according to a search warrant filed in Shenandoah Circuit Court.

Zachary A. Sours, 33, escaped from the custody of Page County Jail while working at New Market Poultry Products on Sept. 14. Deputies arrested Sours three days later when they found him in the front yard of a residence on the 700 block of Wissler Road in Quicksburg.

According to the warrant, filed by Investigator C.M. Grandstaff, Sours had arranged to receive drugs from a family member following his escape.

“Through my investigation, it was discovered that Mr. Sours had been attempting to have a family member bring him narcotics to his work place,” the warrant states.

The warrant notes that this was discovered by a phone conversation he had on his pay-tel phone account through the Page County Jail.

However, after deputies took him to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital for treatment of some wounds, Sours told New Market Police Officer Greg Foss that he had been kidnapped, held in the trunk of a vehicle, and beaten prior to being released in a field, according to the warrant.

Authorities have since charged Sours with escaping custody. According to the Page County Circuit Court database, Sours was serving time for distributing Schedule-II drugs in April of 2015. He was sentenced Aug. 3, 2016.
