Skyline’s Trude visits Richmond for Teacher of the Year announcement

Heidi Trude

Skyline High School French teacher Heidi Trude attended the Virginia Department of Education’s Teacher of the Year reception in Richmond on Monday evening.

Trude was named Region 4 Teacher of the Year in September, the first time a Warren County teacher has received the title. On Monday, she joined seven other regional Teachers of the Year in Richmond for interviews and a reception at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where state officials made the big announcement.

State education officials named Toney McNair Jr., a choral music teacher at Indian River Middle School in Chesapeake, as Virginia’s 2017 Teacher of the Year at the reception.

Trude and the other teachers talked to an interview panel of 13 administrators, teachers and community members Monday afternoon before the event.

“It went amazingly well and I think I did my best at convincing them why I should be the Teacher of the Year,” Trude wrote in an email.

McNair will be Virginia’s nominee for the National Teacher of the Year Program. The National Teacher of the Year will be named in April. Two teachers named from Virginia went on to become National Teacher of the Year: B. Philip Bigler in 1998 and Mary V. Bicouvaris in 1989.
