Front Royal wins competition for best outdoors town

Front Royal has won Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine’s competition for best medium-sized town for lovers of the outdoors, beating out nearby Harrisonburg in the final vote and several others throughout the process.

Tim Smith is Front Royal’s tourism coordinator.

“They divided them into these divisions and we were one of the ones they picked. They picked us as one of the finalists and then we ended up winning. It was all based on voting online through their website and we promoted in on social media to get people to vote for us.”

The prize is a one-page spread in Blue Ridge Outdoors and a feature on the publication’s website. Smith was aware the town had won but Blue Ridge Outdoors waited to announce it in this month’s issue.

“What they did is they called me about a month ago and let me know that we had won but I wasn’t allowed to say anything so they did a piece on the large, medium and small towns that won,” he said. “It’s out now. They gave us a one-page spread and they’re also going to feature us on their website. They’re supposed to be doing a video following an individual whose active in outdoor recreation for a day. That was at no cost to us.”
