Virginia State Police arrested a suspect Monday morning after law enforcement officials said he led troopers on a short chase beginning on Interstate 81 near Toms Brook.

State Police Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler said the chase began with an attempted traffic stop.

“At approximately 10:13 a.m. today, Trooper C.S. Cline was running stationary radar on Interstate 81 and he was monitoring the northbound traffic around the 290 mile marker when he observed a BMW traveling northbound at a high rate of speed,” Tyler said. “He checked his speed at 85 in a 70.”

Tyler said Cline pulled out to initiate a traffic stop but the BMW continued northbound on the interstate at a high rate of speed, eventually taking exit 290 (Toms Brook).

“(The driver) then went westbound on Mount Olive Road (Route 651),” Tyler said. “The trooper continued to overtake the vehicle and then he came upon the BMW after it had crashed just west of route 623 (Back Road).”

The suspect’s vehicle sustained significant damage. The driver, an unidentified juvenile from Stanley, Virginia, was treated on the scene by fire and rescue units. He was arrested and charged with reckless driving, 85 in a 70, reckless driving for failure to maintain control of his vehicle, driving while revoked, improper registration on the vehicle, no insurance and felony eluding of law enforcement officiers, Tyler said.
