Opioid dealer pleads guilty
FRONT ROYAL – A Front Royal woman pleaded guilty to opioid distribution related charges in Warren County Circuit Court on Tuesday.
Cassie Renee Sheetz, 20, was charged with selling buphrenorphine and naloxone, both opiates, and heroin on separate occasions between September 2014 and January 2015. Circuit Judge Clifford Athey Jr. sentenced Sheetz to serve two years in prison, followed by three years of supervised probation.
He said given her young age, Sheetz has too much left in life to waste it on dangerous drugs.
“People who use heroin either end up here in court, in the hospital, or in a graveyard,” he said.
According to a summary of the evidence from Warren County Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Fleming, the Virginia State Police used a confidential informant, equipped with marked funds and a discreet recording device, to purchase narcotics from Sheetz on three occasions.
In the first transaction, Sept. 2, 2014, the informant purchased naloxone and buphrenorphine from Sheetz in her car in a store lot in Front Royal, Fleming said.
On the second, Jan. 27, 2015, the informant purchased $50 worth of heroin from Sheetz in a convenience store parking lot, within 1,000 feet of a school, Fleming said.
On the third, Jan. 28, 2015, the informant purchased $60 worth of heroin from Sheetz at a residence on Viscose Avenue, Fleming said. Later that day, authorities executed a search warrant at the residence, at which time Sheetz disclosed that she had been selling the narcotics and had more in the house, along with Virginia State Police funds in her wallet.
Sheetz’s attorney, David Hensley, did not object to the summary of the evidence.
Athey sentenced Sheetz to 20 years in jail, with all but two years suspended. He also suspended a $1,500 fine. Along with the jail time, Sheetz must forfeit her driver’s license for three years, serve three years of supervised probation, and pay $140 in restitution.
Sheetz and her lawyer requested a delayed report to the jail, which Athey complied with. Her sentence begins at 8 p.m. March 24.
