Suspect tries to elude police, jumps in river

Warren County deputies arrested a man after a foot pursuit that resulted in the suspect jumping into the Shenandoah River to avoid capture on Monday evening.

Authorities responded to a call in relation to a domestic disturbance at roughly 8:30, said Lt. Joshua Seal of the Warren County Sheriff’s Department.

Police went to the male’s residence in the Bennie’s Beach area of Warren County. When they arrived, authorities smelled a “heavy odor” of marijuana emanating from the camper of Joseph Andrews Jr., age 23, from Warren County.

“He tried to go back inside (the trailer), at which point they tried to detain him,” Seal said. “They told him several times not to go back in there and they attempted to detain him when he took off on foot. A foot pursuit then occurred and he jumped into the river. … He didn’t jump very far into the river and he swam back to shore.”

Andrews was then taken to Warren Memorial Hospital for precautionary reasons. He was subsequently charged with obstruction of justice without force and possession of marijuana. He is scheduled to appear in Warren County General District Court at 2 p.m on March 29.
