Warren County departments ask for more people

FRONT ROYAL – Warren County leaders might consider including a few more government positions in next year’s budget.

Department representatives recently made pitches to the Board of Supervisors for funding in the fiscal 2018 budget. Supervisors made no recommendations at the work session – one of several they plan to hold as they deliberate on a spending plan for the county.

County Administrator Doug Stanley said the board has yet to receive information on the projected revenue for fiscal 2018 – data supervisors need to determine what they can fund.

County Attorney Dan Whitten requested a full-time assistant at a cost of approximately $76,000. Whitten took over the office when longtime attorney Blair Mitchell retired but the assistant position remained vacant. Stanley has proposed that the board allocate about $38,000 to cover a half-year’s salary and benefits.

Circuit Court Clerk Daryl Funk requested funding for a full-time librarian for the law library at a cost of almost $40,000. Stanley supported the request in his proposal.

The Parks and Recreation Department asked for a technician at a cost of about $47,000. Stanley has recommended not granting this request or several other part-time positions proposed by the department. Stanley did support the department’s request to increase a recreation and aquatics supervisor and a custodian position from part-time to full-time at a cost of about $45,576 and $39,212 respectively.

The Sheriff’s Office asked for a school resource officer to start in the middle of the budget cycle at a cost of about $20,000. Stanley supported this request.

The Planning and Zoning Department requested a full-time geographic system technician at a cost of about $49,000. Stanley proposed funding the position for half the year to start in January at a cost of about $24,000.

The Department of Fire and Rescue Services asked for two, full-time firefighters/emergency medical technicians at a cost of about $55,000 each. Stanley did not include the request in his proposals.
