Warren County Day of Caring volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for the United Way of Front Royal-Warren County 2017 Day of Caring event this spring.

Executive Assistant Merry-Lynn “Kat” Sheetz said they are looking for as many volunteers as they can get to participate in the May 5 event.

“At this point, we’re still receiving client applications, so it’s hard to determine the number of volunteers needed,” she said. “In past years, we’ve never had too many volunteers.”

At last year’s Day of Caring, Sheetz said they had 159 volunteers complete 23 jobs around the area.

The types of work volunteers will complete depend on volunteer expertise and what can be completed in an eight-hour day. Last year, she said there were several property and yard projects, such as removing debris, mulching, repairing fences, trimming shrubbery, painting, roof flashing, replacing roofing, repairing railings and replacing gutters. Inside work such as repairing broken windows, caulking, plumbing, replacing lights and fans, removing or installing carpeting and installing shower grab bars are possible.

She added that this year’s clientele have requested jobs such as building wheelchair ramps, widening inside door frames to accommodate wheelchairs, painting, replacing deck and porch steps, installing windows, plumbing, replacing vent fans, resealing tubs, repairing flooring, replacing walkways, removing old appliances, replacing drywall, repairing fencing and a lot of yard clean-up.

Day of Caring will be held May 5, with a rain date of May 12. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at the Fantasyland Shelter at 903 Warren Ave. with coffee and donuts available in the morning and bagged lunches of sandwiches, chips, fruit and water ready by mid-day. New this year will be a cook-out at the shelter pavilion for all volunteers after the work is completed.

Download a volunteer waiver form at www.frontroyalunitedway.org. Volunteers are required to sign and submit the waiver before they can work. Volunteers can scan and email signed forms to kat@frontroyalunitedway.org or bring them the morning of the event.

Also, if volunteers are aware of anyone in the community needing help, a client application can be found on the website or they can call the office at 540-635-3636 and have an application mailed. Deadline for client applications is April 7.
