Market set to open Saturday in New Market

The Open Market, which will feature outdoor crafts, produce and food for sale, will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the SunTrust Bank parking lot in New Market.

The market, which is being sponsored by the New Market Chamber of Commerce and organized by the chamber’s merchant committee, is a way to help bring people into New Market on Saturdays and show them what the town has to offer, according to event coordinator Cathy Donald.

“Our goal for the first month was to get 12 vendors, thinking that was very realistic with everything else going on with Apple Blossom, and right now we have 14,” Donald said. “We’ve done several advertising boosts on Facebook, we’ve had newspapers, we’ve contacted radio stations. We’re going to have Chase and Marshall from Paw Patrol with a police cruiser for kids to be able to take their pictures.”

While this Saturday’s inaugural event is competing with the 90th Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Donald explained they’ve already exceeded expectations.

The market, which will be open on the first Saturday of each month rain or shine May through December, is something Donald is optimistic about, not just now, but for the future as well.

“We’re hoping to have enough interest to definitely go past this year,” Donald said. “There seems to be a good response to it and hopefully people will come. We just want to have a kickoff for the opening season.”
