*New tourism center opens in Winchester

By Alex Bridges—Daily Staff Writer

WINCHESTER — Partnership became the buzz word at the grand opening of a new tourism center for the area Monday.

The Winchester-Frederick County Convention and Visitor's Bureau held the event to a number of local and state officials including people involved in tourism. The new location of the Winchester-Frederick County Visitor's Center shares space with the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Civil War Orientation Center.

But as several speakers noted, it took not only federal and state support but also cooperation between the university and local officials.

Workers in January moved from the historic Abram's Delight to the Shenandoah University's Davis Hall next door at 1400 S. Pleasant Valley Road. According to the bureau, the center has seen a 30 percent increase in visitation compared to the same period in 2007.
