Middletown selects new police chief

MIDDLETOWN — The Town Council on Monday unanimously approved Gary Benedict Jr. as the new police chief.

According to Town Manager Rebecca Layman, Benedict is “currently a police chief in Avon, New York. He’s had 35 years of law enforcement experience and he will be relocating down here.”

Benedict was one of 12 applicants for the position. The applicants were evaluated by a panel of current police chiefs from Winchester, Front Royal, Berryville, Woodstock and Frederick County Sheriff Lenny Millholland.  Candidates were whittled down to three finalists before the panel recommended Benedict at a special meeting on May 29.

Benedict will take over as chief on July 1.
