Police identify woman who died in I-81 crash

A driver who was killed Friday afternoon when she was ejected from her vehicle following a crash on Interstate 81 near Winchester has been identified as Scarlett L. Campbell, of Middletown.

Corinne Geller, Virginia State Police public relations manager, stated in an email that Campbell, 43, was driving a Ford Ranger pickup northbound on I-81 at 1 p.m. when it overturned several times. The vehicle went through the median, into the southbound I-81 lanes and hit a message board on the right shoulder of the road.

“The driver was transported to Winchester Medical Center, where she was declared deceased,” Geller stated.

A passenger in the car, identified by Geller as Rose M. Fugitt, 63, of Middletown, was flown to Fairfax Inova Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Geller stated both women were not wearing seatbelts.  Cause of the crash is being investigated.
