Interstate crash sends two people to hospital

A crash on Interstate 81 near Strasburg sent two people to the hospital Friday morning,  according to Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler, a public information officer for the Virginia State Police.

“It happened around 10 a.m. this morning on 81 southbound at the 298-mile marker at the overpass for Water Plant road,” Tyler said. “It involved a 2017 Chevy Volt. It was being operated by a Steven Gross, age 70, from Reston. Also in the vehicle was his wife Lisa Gross, age 64, from Reston.”

Tyler described the events leading to the crash.

“The vehicle was traveling southbound on 81 when the driver lost control and ran off the road to the left into the median, down into an embankment and overturned onto Water Plant Road.”

Both occupants were wearing seatbelts and both were transported to Winchester Medical Center.

The crash was investigated by Trooper D.R. Ayers. He was assisted by Frederick County Fire and Rescue as well as Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue. Based on Ayers’ investigation, Tyler said Steven Gross was charged with reckless driving.

Tyler said that traffic control was put in place for about an hour after the crash.
