WINCHESTER — Authorities say a man broke into a Frederick County home early Monday morning, sexually assaulted a woman inside, then fled with items taken from the residence.

The incident occurred in the 4700 block of Martinsburg Pike, according to Capt. John Heflin, of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. The agency received the report at 2:37 a.m., Heflin said.

“The victim reported she was awakened in the night by a subject standing in her room,” Heflin said.

The subject appeared to have a medium build, wore dark clothing, gloves and a cap or hat, and his face was covered, according to Heflin.

The victim was sexually assaulted but the suspect stopped when interrupted by a noise he heard, Heflin said. The suspect took items from the residence belonging to the victim valued at more than $200 and then fled the home on foot, according to Heflin.

The victim was taken to Winchester Medical Center where she was treated and released, Heflin said. It does not appear the suspect displayed any weapons, he added.

The Berkeley County (W.Va.) Sheriff’s Office and a helicopter unit of the Maryland State Police assisted local authorities in the ongoing investigation, he said.

“We do want to get the word out there right away so if somebody does have some information or saw something they can call in and give us that information and see if that helps with the investigation,” Heflin said, adding authorities wanted to publicize the incident to alert residents in that area.

Anyone with information about the incident may call Crime Solvers at 665-TIPS or the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office at 662-6162.
