One injured when SUV overturns

FRONT ROYAL — An unidentified man sustained serious injuries late Monday when his SUV overturned and struck a tree on Rollason Drive.

Capt. Raymond Cross of the Shenandoah Shores Volunteer Fire Department said the man appeared to be 25-35 years old. Cross said he had no information on the victim’s name and address.

Cross and state police said the crash happened just before 11 p.m. The victim was taken to Winchester Medical Center after fire and rescue workers spent about 45 minutes trying to remove him from the car.

Cross said the SUV appeared to have hit the tree at about 50 mph and sustained extensive damage on the driver’s side. Cross estimated the tree’s trunk diameter to be 20-25 inches.
Cross said the vehicle’s “dash was rolled down on him. We had a pretty extensive extraction.”

Fog grounded the helicopter used to airlift crash victims to the hospital, Cross said. Paramedics transported the man by ambulance.
