Overturned mulch truck halts traffic

Both sides of Va. 55 were closed off for nearly two hours Friday morning after a tractor-trailer carrying mulch overturned near Bobcat Lane.

Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler of the Virginia State Police said the vehicle ran off the right side of the road and overturned at about 10:30 a.m. while heading east. He said the driver, Charles Hartman from Mathias, West Virginia, received a summons for reckless driving.

Tyler said Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue squads responded to the incident, though no one was injured from the crash.

Shenandoah County Sheriff’s officers directed traffic in both directions, having vehicles turn around on the road. Capt. Wesley Dellinger said stopped vehicles stretched for around three-quarters of a mile while VDOT crews cleaned up mulch and a small fuel leak.

“We were very blessed to have a location where we could turn traffic around,” he said.

He said the scene was cleared by 12:45 p.m. and officers re-opened the roadway.
