Tractor-trailers collide on I-81

A collision between two tractor-trailers Wednesday morning caused traffic issues on Interstate 81 just south of Mount Jackson, said Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler, a public information officer for the Virginia State Police.

“The first tractor-trailer was a 2015 Volvo with a box trailer hauling general freight being operated by Wonsuk A. Choi, age 55, from McLean, Virginia,” Tyler said. “He was traveling northbound and he was in the right lane. He went to change lanes and when he did, he sideswiped a 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer that was in the left lane that was being operated by a Frederick W. Miller, age 52, from Ranson, West Virginia.”

Tyler said after they made contact the first tractor-trailer cut right, ran off the road to the right and struck a guardrail. “He then jackknifed in the roadway and came to a stop in the left lane.

Tyler said no injuries were reported. The crash was investigated by Trooper C.D. White. He was assisted at the scene by fire and rescue units from Shenandoah County, Mount Jackson and New Market.

“Based on his (White’s) investigation, he charged Mr. Choi with reckless driving,” Tyler said.

Tyler said that the left lane of the interstate was closed for about an hour.
