Woodstock man faces abduction, other charges

Gary Largent

Authorities arrested a Woodstock man Saturday and charged him with malicious wounding, strangulation and two counts of abduction after a domestic dispute erupted last week.

Gary Edward Largent, 36, of the 900 block of Swartz Road, was detained by deputies with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office following warrants placed for his arrest by deputies with the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office after an incident that began Dec. 12.

Maj. Scott Proctor, of the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office, said the department received a call at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 13 from a 37-year-old female who said the suspect had attacked her.

“[The victim] reported that after a verbal altercation, the accused struck her in the head, knocked her on the ground, dragged her across the ground, and at some point kicked and stomped in the victim’s abdominal and head area,” Proctor said. “It was reported he choked the female to the point she lost consciousness.”

Following the alleged attack, Proctor said Largent did not allow the victim or an 84-year-old female who also lived at the house to leave. Proctor said the 84 year old was related to the suspect and lived in the house, but did not specify further.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies discovered the victim had already been taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. When they spoke with the victim, they observed signs of injuries including bruising, scrapes and scratches, Proctor said.

After the interview, the department obtained warrants for Largent’s arrest and an emergency protective order for the victim.

Largent is being held in the Rockingham County Regional Jail. As of Monday afternoon, he was being held without bail. He is scheduled to appear in Shenandoah County General District Court at 9 a.m. Jan. 27.
