Fire forces temporary closure of commercial laundry

A fire forced a commercial laundry and linen service at 26 Kelley Drive in Front Royal to temporarily close its doors Monday morning.

“Fire and rescue units were dispatched right around 8:20 this morning for a reported structure fire,” Maiatico said. “The fire was relatively contained when units arrived to the area of the drier units. However it did force the facility to close for an undetermined amount of time.”

Fire Marshal Gerry Maiatico said all 30 or so employees working at the laundry, FDR Services, escaped with no reported injuries.

“Fire and rescue units were dispatched right around 8:20 this morning for a reported structure fire,” Maiatico said. “The fire was relatively contained when units arrived to the area of the drier units. However it did force the facility to close for an undetermined amount of time.”

Firefighters contained the fire within 10 minutes or so of their arrival, Maiatico said. He said the fire started due to a “combination of an electrical malfunction and a buildup of lint material.” The fire then spread from the dryer area to an adjoining wall and assembly and the ceiling.

“It had the potential to be a significant fire,” he said. “It was significant enough to force the facility to close. It should be able to open up within 24 to 48 hours.”

Maiatico said he did not yet have a damage estimate.
