Sunday crash sends one to hospital

A two-vehicle crash Sunday evening sent one woman to the hospital after her sport utility vehicle overturned following a collision with a tractor-trailer, said Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler, public information officer for the Virginia State Police.

“(The) crash happened at 5:10 p.m. (on) Interstate 81 northbound at the 283 mile marker,” Tyler said. “There were two vehicles. The first vehicle was a 2016 Kia SUV being operated by Christine Simmons, age 68, from Newark, New Jersey. … She came over into the right lane, struck the side of the tractor-trailer (a 2015 Freightliner) and then went into the median where the Kia struck an embankment and overturned.”

Tyler said that Simmons was taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.

The crash was investigated by Trooper C.S. Cline. He was assisted at the scene by fire and rescue units from Woodstock, Edinburg and Shenandoah County. Based on his investigation, Cline charged Simmons with executing an “unsafe lane change.”

Tyler said the left lane of the interstate was closed during the investigation.
