Strasburg students gearing up for graduation

Cortney McDonald

STRASBURG – Strasburg High School seniors are gearing up for what the future holds.

Cortney McDonald, 18, of Strasburg, is one senior who will be graduating on Friday.  She said she has really enjoyed her time spent at Strasburg High School and for the opportunities it provided her.

McDonald has participated in many Strasburg High School activities, she said, including FFA, National Honors Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Athletic Leadership Council, 4-H, and  volleyball, basketball and softball.

She was also dual-enrolled at Lord Fairfax Community College, earning 33 college credits after taking courses in biology, chemistry, English, statistics, psychology, history and student development. She said being offered these dual-enrolled classes while still in high school has really prepared her for college-level courses.

One of the best moments of her time spent at the high school has been homecoming week because of all the activities that bring the entire school together.

“The whole school gets involved and everybody gets along for a whole week and everyone has a good time,” she added.

She said juggling the academic workload, sports and college classes has been tough, but she has persevered.

“I was really determined because I wanted to excel at sports, I wanted to excel at high school and I wanted to excel at college so I just put my mind to it,” she added. “It was not the easiest thing in the world.”

After her high school graduation, McDonald will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall to study animal and poultry science with future plans to become an equine surgeon.

“When I was younger, all I wanted to do was save all the horses in the world,” she said.

While she can’t save every horse in the world, becoming an equine surgeon is a step in the right direction and it has always been a dream of hers, she added.

After graduating from college, she said she will move to a place with a large equestrian population and prepare for new experiences.
