Board picks Blanton for EDA

A familiar face is joining the Front Royal-Warren County Economic Development Authority’s leadership.

The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to appoint Alexander Gray Blanton to the EDA Board of Directors. Supervisors met in closed session at the end of their regular meeting before emerging and voting on the appointment.

Blanton fills the seat left vacant by the passing of longtime EDA board member Patricia Wines who died in early July. Happy Creek District Supervisor Tony Carter made the motion to appoint Blanton, noting that the new member would have big shoes to fill.

An advertisement by the county published in local newspapers in late July solicited resumes and applications from anyone interested in serving on the EDA board. Supervisors received seven applications for the vacancy, Deputy Clerk Emily Mounce stated in an email Thursday. The county also posted the advertisement on its website and on the bulletin board in the government center several weeks prior to the application deadline.

Supervisors did not conduct interviews for the vacancy.

The Virginia Freedom of Information Act allows the county to withhold as personnel information the names of the people who applied for the vacancy. An opinion issued by the Virginia attorney general found that the governing body is not required to disclose the applications and names of people who, after public invitation, applied for non-paying positions on a public board or commission.

Blanton served on Front Royal Town Council from July 1, 1990 to June 30, 1994.

The supervisors appointed Blanton in December 2006 to fill the South River District seat left vacant by J. Scott Weinberg who left the state. Blanton chose not to seek election to the seat in the November 2007 election.
