Crash sends 8 to area hospitals

A 2017 Dodge Caravan with nine people crashed Saturday morning on Interstate 81, sending eight people to area hospitals.

The Virginia State Police charged Espermarie Corbett, 33, of Savannah, Georgia, with reckless driving and two charges of failure to have a child in child restraints, said state police Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler.

There were six adults and three children in the vehicle when Corbett drove off the right side of the interstate and struck a guard rail at about 6 a.m. Saturday, Tyler said.

Five occupants were transported to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and three were transported to University Of Virginia Health Systems hospital.

Their medical conditions were unknown, he said.

First responders were at the scene for about two hours, he said.

A possible cause of the crash was not stated in the report, Tyler said.
