Florida man dies in I-81 crash

A Panama City, Florida, man died at the scene of a tractor trailer crash on Interstate 81 in Shenandoah County after his vehicle overturned on Sunday.

Michael Connor Carter Jr., 33, was driving a tractor trailer loaded with frozen food in the right lane of northbound I-81,  said state police Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler.

At 11:35 a.m. Sunday, near the 277 mile marker south of Edinburg, Carter attempted to change to the left lane. He struck a guard railing, which caused the vehicle to overturn.

Carter was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

The crash is under investigation by state trooper C.L. Lumaw.

The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office, Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue, and the Virginia Department of Transportation were assisting at the scene. Sunday’s traffic was detoured to U.S. 11 and lanes were backed up until around 3 p.m., Tyler said. Officials expected to have the trailer removed by Sunday night.
