Two indicted in Walmart shoplifting, assault case

FRONT ROYAL — A grand jury on Tuesday indicted a man and a woman who were allegedly involved in a July shoplifting incident at Walmart.

Robert Carl Shinaul Jr., 32, and Skylar Nicole Smith, 20, were each indicted on one count of shoplifting items worth over $200 after they allegedly pushed a shopping cart full of merchandise worth $467.07 out of Walmart. Shinaul was also charged with assault and battery after he allegedly assaulted a man who tried to intervene.

Both were facing a robbery charge but the grand jury declined to indict them on that charge. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Layton agreed with the grand jury’s decision, noting that the decision seemed appropriate given the circumstances of the case.

A search warrant for the pair’s Winchester residence days after the incident led to the recovery of some of the stolen merchandise, Investigator Brad Pugh with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office said at the time of the pair’s arrest.

The next hearing in Shinaul’s case is set for Oct. 2 in Warren County Circuit Court, and he remains in custody at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center. In Smith’s case, the next hearing is set for Oct. 16 in the same court, and she remains out on bond.
