County extends leash law
FRONT ROYAL – River Bend Farm has joined a growing number of Warren County neighborhoods that don’t allow dogs to run at large.
The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve a request from the subdivision to add their neighborhood to the list of designated areas in which the county prohibits dogs from running at large.
The River Bend Farm Property Owners’ Association Inc. requested that the county add the neighborhood to the list. The subdivision includes 36 lots and 25 homes. The association indicated that of the lots represented at its annual meeting Sept. 16, all but two voted in favor of the request. Minutes of the association’s meeting indicate that some members felt threatened by neighborhood dogs running freely across properties but expressed frustration at not receiving help from the Sheriff’s Office. The agency has no authority over dogs in the subdivision.
Judith McCloskey, president of the association’s board of directors, spoke at the public hearing on the request.
The association will have to cover the cost to post signs that indicate the ban.
The county currently prohibits dogs from running at large in more than 20 subdivisions and other designated areas.
Also at the meeting, supervisors voted to:
• Approve a conditional-use permit requested by William and Stephanie Talbot to run a short-term tourist rental off Panhandle Road in the River Oak subdivision. The dwelling is under construction and located adjacent to the Talbot’s home. The land is zoned for agricultural use. No one spoke during the public hearing on the request.
• Approve the additional appropriation to Warren County Public Schools in the amount of $522,488 for fiscal 2018. The amount comes from various sources as a result of unanticipated or unbudgeted revenue.
• Approve a request to move forward with Moseley Architects on the schematic design and development phases as well as additional services for the replacement of the Rivermont Fire Station at a cost of $140,365
• Meet in closed session to consult with legal counsel on the U.S. 340-522 Voluntary Settlement Agreement with Front Royal
