Fire costs chicken processing plant $140,000
The Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at George’s Chicken processing plant Sunday morning.
There were no injuries, but Edinburg Fire Chief Leslie Holler said that George’s lost $140,000 in the fire. That figure comes from the cost of lost products and the man-hours required to clean up after the incident, Holler said.
“What caused it was an overhead light,” Holler said. “They don’t know if it shorted out or what, but it got hot and started melting and dropped down on the wax boxes that keep the (pallets of processed chicken).”
George’s did not respond to requests for comment.
Holler said that the processing facility, despite the fire, was up to code. Edinburg’s department was joined on the scene by Strasburg, Conicville and Woodstock volunteer fire departments, as well as Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue.
