New Market appoints town clerk, adds staff reports to monthly meetings

NEW MARKET – The Town Council appointed Todd Walters as town clerk in a 5-0 vote Monday, one month after he was appointed town manager and 17 days after he officially moved to town.

Walters’ appointment is in line with New Market tradition, as both roles have customarily been held by a single person.

The council also noted a recent lack of updates from the town’s police, public works and events and marketing sectors due to several canceled work sessions. A vote to require staff reports at all future regular council meetings in addition to work sessions passed 5-0, with only council member Tim Palmer absent.

“It’s something we’ve been missing,” council member Gary Comer said.

The council also approved a $100 Christmas bonus for each of the town’s 19-member staff, which council member Peggy Harkness said “doesn’t convey how grateful we are.”

Walters praised Events and Marketing Director Amber Smoot for her use of Facebook Live to promote local businesses.

“As old as I am, I’m still a social media-type person,” Walters said. “I tell you, the more you can get stuff out to people, I think the better off everybody is.”
