Winchester man dies after being struck by car

Michael Lawrence Gaylord, 67, of Winchester, was struck by a vehicle around 5 a.m. Thursday and died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Virginia State Police Sgt. F. “Les” Tyler, said Gaylord pulled his 2007 Toyota Camry to the side of the road facing northbound in the 5600 block of Wardensville Grade and, for an unknown reason, exited his vehicle and left the headlights on.

Cecil Jones, 36, also of Winchester, was traveling southbound in his 2007 Saturn four-door. Coming around the curve Jones was blinded by Gaylord’s headlights, Tyler said, and he struck Gaylord, who was standing in the road.

Trooper G. E. Peele conducted the investigation and was assisted by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office as well as North Mountain Fire and Rescue and Strasburg Fire and Rescue.

The investigation is active and police have not determined why Gaylord exited his vehicle. No charges have been filed against Jones.
