New Market man killed in father-son dispute

Roger Allen Bruce, 66, of New Market, was shot and killed in a father-son dispute on Christmas Eve, according to a news release from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:04 p.m. Dec. 24 at Bruce’s son’s residence in Coltons Point, Maryland.

According to police, Roger Bruce discharged a firearm at his son, Michael Bruce, 45, who returned fire and fatally wounded Roger Bruce. The father died from his injuries at the scene.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office released the names of the shooter and the deceased on Wednesday.

No charges have been filed, and the case remains active.

When asked if other relatives were present at Michael Bruce’s home during the altercation, Cpl. Julie L. Yingling, of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, said the “investigation is still ongoing, therefore we aren’t releasing any further information.”

However, the department’s news release states that Roger Bruce “was visiting relatives at the residence when (the) argument ensued.”

Yingling also declined to disclose the nature of the argument between Roger and Michael Bruce.
