FRONT ROYAL – The allure of homemade burgers, fries and buttered buns made Spelunker’s “Food Dude” Brandon Frye’s latest stop.

Frye, 42, of South Riding, has spent the last five years visiting restaurants nationwide for his internet-based show “Food Dude USA.” Its premise is showcasing restaurants and their employees, from mom and pop shops to chains.

“I come in, try out their food, show people what they make, and show the quality,” Frye said. “And I want people to meet the great people who own restaurants.”

Frye has been hearing about Spelunker’s Burgers & Frozen Custard Restaurant, 116 South St., for three years, and “finally after I’d heard it for the hundredth time, I’m like ‘dude, I’ve got to check that place out,'” he said.

So, he called Spelunker’s and asked if he could film in the restaurant. Manager April Antonelli said they were happy to host.

After touring the kitchen and seeing the chefs at work, Frye began eating and was not disappointed. He sampled a chili hot dog, a burger, french fries, and more.

“Loved it. Great product, they grind all of their burgers, they hand-cut all of their fries, they made the chili from scratch, they put all of their toppings in their ice cream. I mean, that’s what I like,” he said.

Frye has eaten out about five days a week since he was 18, which is what cultivated his love for restaurants. Though he may eat out a lot, he stays in shape by being a jiu jitsu instructor.

“I’m not a chef, I don’t have a culinary degree. I’m a regular dude … Sometimes I go to McDonald’s, sometimes I go to Ruth Chris, sometimes I go mom and pop. I don’t discriminate,” Frye said.

The episode filmed at Spelunker’s will appear on Jive Wire Television, all of Frye’s social media pages, and fooddudeusa.com. It should be online in about a month.

His ultimate goal is to have a show on the Food Network and be “the next Guy Fieri.”

He is moving closer to make that wish come true – he is working on a pilot idea with “Diners-Drive-ins-and Dives” creator David Page.
